Why the dog in the house reduces the risk of asthma in children
Children in the first year of their lives growing up in homes where there are dogs-or other animals if it comes to provincial face less risk of asthma in the coming years, according to a large Swedish scientific research.
Researchers at the Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Uppsala and medical Karolinska Institute of Stockholm University, led by assistant professor of epidemiology Tov Fal, made after publication in the American pediatric journal "JAMA Pediatrics", studied the correlation between exposure to animals and the childhood asthma.
The researchers analyzed data for 376 638 preschool children (of which 53 460 were exposed to dogs and 1,729 other animals), and to 276 300 school children (of which 22 629 were domestic dogs in their family and 958 were other animals).
The 5% of preschool children and 4.2% of school children had developed asthma. The study showed that the coexistence with dogs during the first year of a child's life is associated with an average reduction of 13% to 15% risk for asthma appearance at the start of school age (six years).
Exposure to other animals (livestock, etc.) associated with an average reduction of asthma by 31% in preschool and 52% in school age. The risk reduction was irrelevant of whether the parents have asthma or if the child was born.
Childhood asthma is a global health problem. A number of environmental factors apart from genetikous- have been associated with an increased or decreased risk of occurrence.
The Swedish researchers said it is not clear what biological mechanism explaining the association of exposure to animals with a reduced risk of asthma. As however Fal said, "in a house with a child and a dog, it's almost impossible to keep everything clean one and maybe that is a good thing for the future health of the baby."
According to the so-called "hygiene hypothesis", a dirtier environment ultimately strengthens the immune system. The early exposure of children to pets means that children breathe air with more bacteria, which probably the benefits, reducing the risk of asthma.
A previous study of 2012 was also concluded that exposure to animals in the home, especially in dogs, is associated with reduced risk of asthma and allergies.
"The message from the new study is that parents need not worry whether to keep the dog or get a dog when expecting a child, fearing asthma. But this is true only for those families that do not already have a child with allergies. If a child has seen allergic to animals with fur, then they should not get a pet. "
Pets are a main cause of allergies. It is estimated that about half of asthmatic children are allergic to cats and 40% in dogs.
Experts recommend to those who have pets at home and yourself are allergic, keep away animals from the bedroom to wash frequently, sweeping areas as is best done with a vacuum cleaner and know that there is no dog breed that does not causes allergy.
